Essentials for Choosing Potable Water Tank Lining

The biggest consideration for choosing potable water tank lining can be answered in one question. Is it NSF-61 certified? Potable water tank lining requires this certification for liners used to contain water for human consumption. This certification ensures that the liner, as well as any additives or polymer ingredients, are safe for contact with drinking water. While this is one of the most important factors in choosing potable water tank lining, it’s not the only element to consider.

Considerations for Choosing Potable Water Tank Lining

NSF-61 Certification – As we discussed above, NSF-61 potable water certification reigns as the most important factor when choosing water tank lining for drinking water. Water tank lining material is inspected to ensure additives such as UV stabilizers, heat stabilizers, antioxidants and the polymers used to create the liner itself are safe for contact with drinking water. Certain liner materials such as PVC include plasticizers as additives to make it more flexible. These types of materials are not NSF-61 certified, as plasticizers are harmful to humans.

Impermeability – When it comes to choosing potable water tank lining, impermeability is essential. Liners need to be waterproof and have durable seams that won’t cause leakage. Having a waterproof seal helps prevent leaks in the liner and transmission of liquids or vapor. Choosing a reinforced polyethylene (RPE) or reinforced polypropylene (RPP) liner means it can be heat welded, which decreases the chances of losing water to seam leaks.

Weather Resistance – For water tanks exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation, choosing lining with weather resistant properties should be considered. It’s important to choose water tank lining that doesn’t include plasticizers or additives that could leach over time. Weather resistant liners won’t degrade over time despite exposure to sunlight and other natural elements.

Durability – Water tank lining needs to be durable and resistant to regular wear and tear, as well as puncturing. Reinforced geomembranes like polyethylene and polypropylene provide impeccable durability that doesn’t require an underlayment. Along with durability comes ease of repair. While choosing a durable water tank lining material helps decrease the need for repair, accidents do happen. Choosing a material that’s easy to repair is a necessary consideration. RPE and RPP liners can be easily repaired with on-site heat welding, which doesn’t harm the integrity of the liner.

  1. We are pursuing 5000 and 10,000 gal polyethylene and fiberglass tanks for storage of potable water. What is required for installing such liners. Can they be installed by customers or do they require certified installer? I also request a rough cost estimate for liners of the sizes cited above.
