Are evaporation ponds monitored for potential hazardous leaks or seepage?

Almost without exception today, there are monitoring controls in place at all commercial operations within the United States, and in most industrialized nations, to detect seepage, leaks or malfunction of evaporation ponds. Although the same is not necessarily true in developing countries or with small operations, there is growing understanding of the technology, and of the need for reliable monitoring and controls. Contamination has become much easier and cost-effective to prevent than to remediate, and every responsible user is aware of the consequences that can result from misuse or carelessness.

Because evaporation has become a recognized method to separate both harmful and desirable solids, chemicals and organic materials from liquids, there is an entire new scientific and technological field that is devoted to making the process even more effective and economical than it is at present. We may yet see advances in evaporative ponding that we can only imagine today; and it is certain that the future will introduce new administrative procedures and reclamation efforts.
