Are geomembranes used in waste management?

Geomembranes are very often used in waste management in order to control, transport, and contain leachate, runoff, and other wastewater fluids. Sanitary landfills require multiple kinds of geomembranes in order to properly control the liquid associated with landfill decay. Leachate is the fluid formed and collected within a landfill as organic materials break down, and chemical/liquid waste seeps through the solid waste. This fluid is incredibly corrosive, and requires a durable, chemically-resistant liner, like BTL's AquaArmor.

You can also find geomembranes used to cover sanitary landfills to protect the waste from precipitation and prevent erosion. Sanitary landfills are typically constructed deep into the ground. It's essential the the surrounding earth is protected from any of the toxins or liquids found within the waste. Dangerous chemicals found in waste can cause serious health issues if they're allowed to reach the groundwater.
