Geosynthetic materials have become critical components in the design and performance of mining facilities. Geosynthetic materials are now commonly used for containment of process solutions in heap leach pads, process and overflow ponds, tailings impoundments, and waste rock facilities. Geosynthetic materials are also used in foundation stabilization, mine reclamation, surface water diversion structures, and in environmental projects (revegetation and erosion control)
In addition to tailings ponds and leachate containment, geomembranes are also used in a variety of other mining applications. They are commonly used in the construction of heap leach pads, which are used to extract metals from low-grade ores. Geomembranes are also used in the construction of slurry ponds, which are used to store a mixture of water and fine particles generated during the mining process. By providing an impermeable barrier, geomembranes help to ensure that these materials are contained and do not pose a threat to the environment or human health.
