Are there environmentally friendly options for silage covers?

The environmental burden of silage covers is a big topic among farmers and ranchers. Many manufacturers promote their covers as recyclable, but in practical terms, actually getting them recycled is an expensive proposition and most silage producers end up sending them to the landfill.

As awareness of the environmental effects of disposal, as well as concern over the use of plastics derived from petroleum products rise, a host of alternatives are becoming available, although early price points may be hard to accommodate for smaller operations. Biodegradable silage covers made from compostable films or green vegetable materials are an excellent example.
