Underground aquifers can be depleted if too much water is pulled out without being recharged. Some municipalities and local governments will have restrictions on how much groundwater can be pumped, or what it can be used for. This is more likely to be restricted in places where drought and depleted groundwater are a serious concern.
A depleted aquifer can lead to dried up wetlands, lakes, and other bodies of water. This can cause serious damage to local ecosystems and human that depend on the local watertable.
