Can a greenhouse feed a family?

A greenhouse can be sized up to almost any scale; even a small attached greenhouse can produce enough produce to supply a family if the space is used intensively. Start seeds early in the spring or late winter so they're mature enough to transplant to your outdoor space as soon as weather permits. Then you can sow a new set that will mature a few weeks later and keep your production at maximum throughout the summer. Alternatively, start an entirely different crop to provide endless variety to your meals.

Don't forget to keep your greenhouse productive during the winter too! Plenty of healthy, hearty vegetables actually prefer cool weather and certain root vegetables actually taste better once they've been exposed to a light frost! An unheated greenhouse can provide the ideal conditions to keep cool season crops happy - cool, but not freezing. Don't miss out on fully half the delicious food you can use to keep your family healthy and well fed.
