Can a greenhouse make money?

A greenhouse can provide a variety of fruits and vegetables that can be sold at farmers' markets or roadside stands, if it's large enough to produce more than you need to feed the family. You can sell excess fruits and vegetables in local farmers' markets or roadside stands, or even explore the demand for fresh local produce at "farm-to-fork" restaurants. Take a look around and see what's in demand and what you can grow at reasonable expense with a markup that actually brings you a profit for your time and effort. Fresh salad greens, strawberries (especially out of season), vine-ripe tomatoes, even mushrooms may be good candidates. Keep your mind open and talk to people. Keep in mind that your best selling products may change from season to season.

You may also want to consider some unique options for producing handicrafts, but some handicraft materials may take much more room to produce in volume for regular sale. But don't be discouraged. Would your customers at the farmer's market be interested in buying their own ready-made herb gardens? Start seeds of a variety of common, easy-to-grown herbs (not your big cash cows of course) and sell them in sets along with instructions on how to build an easy indoor or balcony greenhouse, or even a simple coldframe. Offer specific growing information and be open to providing some problem solving and even recipes for using the herbs to their advantage! You might even put together some ready-to-go greenhouses & cold frames, if you're handy and have leftover materials. Let your creativity flow!
