Can a Silt Curtain be Repaired?

Silt or Turbidity curtains can be repaired, but the process requires that the panel in question be removed from the water, which can be a significant undertaking. For this reason, it’s best policy to perform regular inspections and maintenance, and even pre-emptive removal of the curtain when significant storm events are expected. If a repair is necessary, the procedure for tears and punctures in the middle of the curtain involves applying a patch using either a thermal (heat) gun, or a solvent glue. If the damage involves anchor points, connections or other structural components, check with your supplier -- you may need to simply replace the panel in question.

To avoid the prospect of repairing a silt curtain, take care from the very beginning to expose it to damage or unnecessary wear. When multiple parts are laid out for connecting prior to installation, use an area void of sharp rocks and abrasive surfaces. If the surface is rough or uneven, avoid stepping on the skirt altogether. If you’re unable to avoid abrasive surfaces like concrete bulkheads, cover the section in question with thick plastic sheets, a layer of cardboard, or even plywood. If you’re able to lay down something that helps the curtain to slide smoothly into the water as you complete setup, all the better. If you will have to tow the curtain to its installation point, consider talking to your supplier about a towing harness or some other mechanism that will avoid putting strain on structural elements. Always keep the curtains furled until your floats are anchored in place. Finally, be sure to inspect your curtain regularly - in some cases that may be daily. Check for proper freeboard, secure anchors and that the curtain is maintaining the proper profile. Make sure the water depth does not permit the curtain to rest on the bottom. Over time, you’ll want to check for UV or chemical damage and marine growth. If you’re able to handle any issues as soon as they appear, the life and effectiveness of your turbidity curtain will be substantially extended.
