Desalination reservoirs can be built both in cities and outside urban areas, but the location depends on space availability, land cost, and water quality considerations. In urban areas, space is often limited, so reservoirs are more likely to be enclosed tanks, either aboveground or underground, which protect water quality and minimize land use. These designs also reduce exposure to debris, pollution, and vandalism, which can be concerns in densely populated areas.
Outside urban areas, open reservoirs are more common, especially when large volumes of storage are needed. Land is generally cheaper and more available, and open basins can be built at a lower cost per cubic meter of storage. However, these reservoirs may require additional measures to secure water quality, such as linings, fencing, or partial covers.
