Can I Select and Install a Turbidity Curtain On My Own?

It’s important to consult with local regulations and sometimes even a turbidity specialist in order to determine which curtain is best for you. Complex currents, inclement weather, or high tides may require the help of an engineer to consider special measurements. However, if it’s determined that you’ll only be needing to implement a small or simple solution, the right tools can empower you to install and maintain a turbidity curtain on your own. For standard Type 1 DOT turbidity curtain meant to be anchored on land where the water movement is minimal, installation can be as simple as extending the barrier between anchor points, attaching it, and allowing the ballast chain to pull the curtain to the bottom. For anything more complex, the precise steps may differ.

In the case of multiple panels, you’ll want to lay out the curtain over clear land, removing any sharp objects like rocks. This is one of the easiest places to cause a tear in your fabric, so laying down tarps beforehand may be helpful. The types of panel connections vary according to the manufacturer, so follow your supplier’s directions exactly to ensure a strong connection and effective seal between panels. Roll up the skirt section once you’re finished to prevent damage during deployment. Repeat this step, panel by panel, moving the completed sections out into the water as you go. Once fully assembled and placed in your staging pattern, the assembled curtain can be placed in water.
