Can Landscape Fabric Cause Drainage Problems?

Landscape fabric generally allows water to pass through, but poor installation or certain types of fabric can create drainage problems. If the material is not permeable enough or becomes clogged with soil, mulch, or debris, water may pool on the surface instead of soaking into the ground.

Wrinkles, folds, or improperly overlapped seams can also trap moisture and slow drainage. On slopes, insufficiently secured fabric may shift, creating channels that direct water away from plants or cause erosion. Choosing a high-quality, breathable fabric and laying it flat with proper overlap helps prevent these issues. Cover it with mulch or gravel to protect the fabric and prevent clogging while maintaining good water flow to the soil below.
