Liners can be effective in limiting nutrient loss during cycles of thawing and refreezing. When soil beneath a storage area repeatedly shifts as the temperatures flucturate, small channels can form in the ground, allowing liquid to seep downward even when the surface appears frozen.
A liner creates a stable barrier that keeps stored manure or wastewater from escaping through these openings, no matter how the surrounding soil moves. RPE liners in particular maintain their strength and flexibility in cold conditions, which helps them stay intact while the ground expands and contracts.
