Can silage covers withstand extreme weather conditions?

A high quality silage cover, properly installed and weighted, should withstand most weather situations. Choose a material that is highly UV resistant, completely waterproof, and resistant to tears. Carefully weigh down the silage cover completely across the surface, paying special attention to the ends and corners to prevent uplift in high winds.

Make sure that any overlapping panels are configured to direct water down and away from the pile and don't accidentally encourage water to seep back up into the pile. Place your panels so the seams align with the direction of the prevailing wind. Choose materials that tolerate temperature extremes and don't lose flexibility under extremely cold conditions. Keep your structures in mind as well. Sunken bunkers that keep the top of the pile low can reduce risks associated with high winds, but above-ground bunkers are less vulnerable to flooding.
