Yes, snow accumulation can cause problems for an unlined earthen pond because the weight of the snow and the water released during melting both place additional stress on the soil structure. As the snow melts, a large volume of water enters the pond quickly, raising the water level and increasing pressure on the walls.
If the surrounding soil is still frozen, it cannot absorb this extra moisture, which can trigger erosion or slumping along the edges. Repeating cycles of snow buildup, melting, and refreezing also weaken the soil by creating cracks or soft spots that worsen over time. Without a liner to hold water in place, leaks and seepage can pass through the pond bottom or sides.
