Can you grow house plants with aquaponics?

House plants can grow beautifully in an aquaponics system - just like vegetables and fruit, when provided with proper light conditions and the constant supply of nutrients offered through aquaponics, they will grow fast and lush and quickly become the envy of all your friends. You might choose to simply display a few lush ferns, a dense spider plant, or a delicate china doll. On the other hand, you may want to expand your hobby to share healthy young plants with your friends and garden club buddies. You may even decide to grow orchids or even roses for sale on a larger scale. However, some plants that prefer highly acidic conditions, like blueberries or azaleas, for example, may prove impossible to match up with fish that will tolerate them.

One lovely combination to pair with houseplants in an aquaponics system is ornamental koi. Koi aren’t tasty fish, so they’re not raised for food the same way tilapia is, but if your primary goal is to grow beautiful ornamental plants, koi could be an excellent counterpart. Koi are hardy fish and can adapt easily to a range of conditions, so pairing them with the requirements of specific plants shouldn’t be a big issue. Koi live for a long time and have engaging personalities, so you may come to regard them as your plant care partners, contributing their own beauty and tranquility to your space as surely as your plants do.
