Can you grow shrimp with aquaponics?

Yes! Shrimp and prawns are some of the most profitable harvests that can come out of aquaponics. These are delicious little creatures, and can be grown on their own, or even as additions to an already populated tank. Since shrimp are bottom feeders, they'll eat pretty much anything: organic matter and debris, worm bits, fish waste, etc. These can thrive within the fish tank itself, or inside the canals underneath rafts in deep water cultivation aquaponic systems. Underneath your rafts, shrimp can feast on dead roots, excess nutrients, and other particles. Don't worry: they should leave your plant's important roots alone, as long as there isn't too many of them.

Baby shrimp are tasty snacks for your fish, and should be protected and kept separate until they're big enough to be distinguished from lunch. Building hiding places for your shrmp is a good idea, as hungry shrimp are grumpy, and sometimes cannibalistic. Ideally, you'll have 2 square feet of space per each shrimp to reduce territorial behavior. Shrimp take around 4 months to reach market size (about 3 oz per shrimp). They thrive in water between 75 and 85°F with a pH level between 7.8 and 8.5.
