Can you homestead in the city?

Yes! Urban homesteading is exploding in popularity in recent years, and more and more opportunities for city gardening/sustainable living are emerging every day. Small compact greenhouses are available pre-built, and online in DIY forums. These can be nestled in a backyard, or even on a patio/balcony in some cases. Even without a greenhouse, small plants can be grown virtually anywhere as long as their needs are met and their temperature/humidity is right. There are ways to save space even while you begin filling your small condo with plants. Vertical farming takes advantage of vertical open space which is rarely utilized. Plants are stacked upon one another, either hanging or suspended, and water is delivered to the topmost plants, letting gravity do the rest of the work.

If you have even an acre of land, this is enough room for a large garden and even a dairy cow. However, city ordinances may take issue with lots of forms of animal production, including even chickens. If this is true for you, there's still ways to make this work. Bees and rabbits are low-impact and generally non-legistlated, and can provide fantastic sources of honey, fur, or even meat.
