Can you use flexible geomembranes as underlayment for irrigation canals?

Yes, you can—and in areas like California, this type of canal system can prove useful because it minimizes water loss through seepage, excessive evaporation, and leaks. When you pair a product from BTL Liners with concrete (Armor Pro makes a good choice), the flexible liner will mitigate water loss from seepage through the concrete. Concrete is also prone to cracking, especially in regions where soil shifts often—and this is a common phenomenon in sandy California soils. If concrete does crack, the flexible liner serves as a backup to keep water in the canal.

Covering a flexible liner with concrete also helps that liner last longer, namely because the liner won’t be exposed to UV rays. While BTL Liners’ RPE liners are UV resistant, the sun will still take its toll over time, so this will create an exceptionally long-lasting canal system. Concrete is also light colored, which is advantageous if you’re using a black liner. Since black liners absorb heat, they can raise water temperature in canals, which can cause a little more water loss through evaporation.
