Do aeroponics systems make food taste funny?

A well managed aeroponics system produces pure and natural flavors without any "off" taste. While neither system uses chemicals common to soil-based gardening, like pesticides or fungicides, hydroponics vegetables have gotten a bad reputation in years past for bland tomatoes and chemical flavors in other products. These flavors are usually related to inappropriate balances in nutrient solution, excess water absorption, and other growing conditions, but technology has improved in recent years and even high-end restauranteurs prefer the fresh taste of hydroponic and aeroponic produce.

Although strictly speaking it is a subset of hydroponics, aeroponics enjoys some advantages compared to other hydroponics systems. In aeroponics, the nutrient concentration is much lower and roots are never submerged in the solution. The amount of solution applied through misting is carefully calculated, and roots take up exactly what they need. This precision eliminates problems with waterlogging and residual (nutrient) chemical taste. Some growers even switch to plain water flushing a few days before harvesting to make absolutely sure any trace of nutrients is flushed away.
