Do canal liners prevent algae growth?

Canal liners can help reduce algae growth by blocking sunlight from reaching the canal bed, which is a key factor in algae development. Materials like geomembranes, when properly installed, prevent light penetration and limit the nutrients available to algae. However, while liners can reduce the ideal conditions for algae growth, they do not eliminate the possibility entirely.

Algae may still grow along the edges of the canal or in areas where the liner does not completely seal or where debris accumulates. Cleaning the canal and removing organic matter, is essential to prevent algae from thriving in these areas. Canal liners play a role in controlling algae growth but are not a complete solution on their own.
