Canal liners help prevent weed and vegetation growth by creating an impermeable barrier that stops plant roots from penetrating the soil beneath the canal. Flexible geomembranes, concrete, and other types of liners block sunlight and moisture from reaching the soil, making it difficult for weeds to establish themselves.
In some cases, a geotextile layer is used beneath the liner to provide further protection against plant growth. However, while liners can significantly reduce vegetation growth within the canal, some invasive plants may still find ways to grow along the edges or in cracks and gaps in the liner.
