Some desalination plants use underground storage reservoirs, particularly in areas where land is limited, expensive, or where water quality protection is a priority. Underground reservoirs, often called cisterns or covered tanks, provide secure storage for treated water while minimizing exposure to sunlight, debris, and animals, which helps reduce the risk of microbial growth and taste or odor issues.
These facilities can be constructed from reinforced concrete, steel, or other durable materials, and they often include linings and access points for inspection and maintenance. Because they are below ground, they also benefit from temperature stability, which helps maintain disinfectant levels and overall water quality over longer storage periods.
