Mining can deplete surface and groundwater supplies. Groundwater withdrawals may damage or destroy streamside habitat many miles from the actual mine site. As mining industries pull water from the ground for their purposes, the aquifer may not have a chance to recharge adequately.
Depleted aquifers can cause lakes, rivers, and wetlands to dry up which previously relied on groundwater to replenish their stores.
