Geomembranes are made out of a woven blend of durable polymers, layered to increase the material's durability and resistance. This blend of impermeable polymers can include polyethylene, polyvinyl, or polypropylene.
These raw polymers are processed with protective additives, such as antioxidants, plasticizers, fillers, and lubricants. The materials are then manufactured through either extrusion or calendering. Extrusion is the process of drying the plastic, and then heating it into a molten state. The melted material is forced through a mold that determines its size and shape before it is cooled and made solid. Calendering uses high-pressure rollers to flatten the sheets into thin layers.
