Liners in large cooling ponds are installed through a carefully planned process to ensure they fit securely and perform effectively. The first step is preparing the pond's surface by removing any debris, rocks, or vegetation that could damage the liner. Once the surface is smooth, the liner material, such as an XR-5 geomembrane, is rolled out in large sheets.
These sheets are then positioned and anchored along the edges of the pond. To prevent leaks, the seams of the liner are sealed using heat or chemical bonding, ensuring a continuous, impermeable surface. In some cases, the liner is also welded together to form larger sections before installation. The edges of the liner are often buried or weighted down to keep them in place and prevent water from seeping under the material. The installation process requires skilled workers to carefully position and secure the liner to avoid wrinkles or gaps that could cause leaks.
