Liners provide a durable barrier that stops liquid from passing into the surrounding soil, even when the ground is compromised by rapid temperature fluctuations. Materials like RPE remain flexible in the cold, which means they can handle the expansion and contraction that occurs during freeze–thaw cycles without cracking.
A flexible liner conforms tightly to the lagoon floor and walls, blocking pathways where manure or wastewater could escape. By sealing the base and sides of the lagoon, liners also protect against the small fractures that can form in clay or concrete when exposed to winter weather.
