How can you cover a brine pond?

Cases in which brine ponds must be covered are rare—but it does happen, and there is a right way to do it. One way to do it is to install a flexible geomembrane over a concrete lined brine pond. This method works, and it is possible to get decent results using these different materials—but it will prove much harder to make that seal airtight since it is difficult if not impossible to create a seal between these two dissimilar materials.

If a seal is needed that doesn’t allow air or gas to leak out of the brine pond, then it’s best to use a cover that is the same material as the liner. This is one reason why flexible liners are ideal. Ponds can be sealed off with RPE liners and covers, providing an air-tight seal that doesn’t allow for evaporation. Typically, the layers are sealed with solvents or heat, which gives you several options to simplify the sealing process.
