Catching and handling koi requires care and patience to avoid injuring the fish or stressing them unnecessarily. When you need to catch a koi, use a soft, fine-mesh net that’s large enough to accommodate their size without damaging their fins or scales. Guide the fish gently rather than chasing it, as sudden movements can cause panic.
Once in the net, it's best to transfer the koi using a koi sock or a water-filled container, which helps support its body and reduce stress. If you must handle the koi directly, wet your hands first to prevent removing the protective slime coat that guards against infection. Always support the koi’s body with both hands—one near the head and the other under the tail—to keep it secure and minimize struggling. Avoid holding koi out of water longer than necessary and return them to the pond gently.
