How do I cover the edges of my pond liner?

There are many ways to cover and hide the edge of the pond liner where it overlaps the ground. Some of the most common methods include plants, various types of natural or manufactured rock, bricks and concrete pavers, plastic molded edge pieces, and mesh or natural screening. Rocks are generally stacked in piles over the liner not only to disguise it but also to hold it down. Stick with rounded square and slab-style rocks to make them easy to stack and unlikely to tear or cut the liner material with any sharp edges. Plants may seem a more affordable choice, but the cost for tons of potted water plants quickly adds up. It’s generally easier to blend plants with rocks and pavers to stretch your budget while getting a natural look.

Paving stones, bricks, and other concrete shapes give you complete control over the finished look. These materials are also great for building steps into a pond that will be used for swimming or cleaned regularly by hand. Plastic molded edges are the least natural looking option, but they’re also quick to install and inexpensive. Another low cost option for disguising the edges is to cover them with plastic mesh and applying aquatic moss. Natural screening material made from reeds will break down after a year or so, but it’s a low cost and biodegradable way to cover the edges as well.
