To cut holes for plants in landscape fabric, start by marking the spot where each plant will go. Use a sharp utility knife or scissors to make a small X or plus-shaped cut in the fabric, just large enough for the plant’s root ball to fit through.
Fold back the corners of the cut to make it easier to position the plant without stretching or tearing the fabric. Once the plant is in place, gently lay the fabric around the base to maintain a close barrier against weeds. Avoid making larger holes than necessary, because any gaps can allow sunlight to reach the soil and enable weeds to grow.
