How Do I Prepare A Koi Pond For Winter?

Preparing a koi pond for winter involves several steps to ensure the fish remain healthy and safe during colder months. As temperatures drop, koi enter a state of slowed metabolism and do not need to be fed once the water temperature falls below 50°F. Before this happens, clean the pond by removing debris like leaves and sludge, which can decay and affect water quality.

A pond net can help keep falling leaves out. Check the filtration system and remove or protect equipment that may be damaged by freezing. It's important to maintain an opening in the ice to allow for gas exchange, which can be done with a pond de-icer or an aerator placed near the surface. Never try to break the ice, as the shock can harm the koi. Ensure that the pond is deep enough—ideally at least three feet—so the water does not freeze solid and koi can stay in the warmer bottom layers. Monitor water quality through the season, even if the pond is not actively maintained, to prevent harmful conditions from developing under the ice.
