Proper preparation is key—there are several steps you’ll need to take to make sure it is done right. One of the biggest threats to a farm pond liner is soil compaction, which can happen as the pond fills and the volume of water presses down from above. This can lead to strain on the liner, and eventually to leaking seams or tears in the liner.
To prevent this type of compaction, start by clearing away vegetation and trees. Make sure stump holes and crevices are filled, and then till the soil to a depth of 18 inches. Following that, use a sheepsfoot roller to compact the soil. This will help prevent further compaction—and strain on your pond liner—later on.
