Preventing winter seepage starts with keeping the pit’s barrier layers strong and well-protected before temperatures drop. Frozen soil often shifts and cracks, so making sure the pit is properly compacted and lined helps limit the pathways liquid can follow during freeze–thaw cycles. Synthetic liners or reinforced clay layers provide a stable surface that is less prone to breaking apart, which reduces the chance of hidden leaks forming as the ground changes.
Always maintain liquid levels within the recommended operating range, since overfilling increases pressure on the walls and can force seepage through weakened spots. Regular inspections during cold weather, even if only from the surface, allow you to notice unusual drops in liquid volume or signs of moisture around the pit that might signal a developing issue. Keeping runoff diverted away from the structure prevents ice buildup around the sides, which can worsen ground movement and stress the pit’s integrity.
