Protecting koi from predators is an important part of pond management, especially if you live in an area with raccoons, herons, or other wildlife. One effective method is to build a pond with steep sides and a depth of at least three feet, which makes it harder for wading birds or animals to reach the fish. Netting stretched over the pond surface can physically block birds and other animals, though it may require occasional maintenance.
Installing motion-activated sprinklers or lights around the pond can startle and deter predators from approaching. Providing hiding spots, such as caves, tunnels, or plant-covered areas, gives koi a place to retreat when they sense danger. Rock overhangs or floating plants also help break up sightlines from above, making it more difficult for birds to spot the fish. If predators are persistent, using decoy animals like heron statues can sometimes discourage territorial birds from landing.
