The first step in adjusting pH in your hydroponic nutrient solution is getting an accurate reading. Test strips and liquid test kits are inexpensive and readily available at pool supply and garden stores. However, digital pH meters give a more accurate reading. Keep in mind that frequent testing is critical, especially if you're new at operating a hydroponics system. Each time you've adjusted nutrient levels, a repeat test is necessary.
The simplest way to make adjustments to your nutrient solution is to use prepared "pH up" or "pH down" products formulated especially for hydroponics systems. Available in liquid form, they're easy to add in your reservoir, if you use one. Buffering solutions are also useful, as they reproduce some of the steadying effect that keeps soil pH fairly uniform.
