How do you find a leak in a farm pond?

Finding a leak in a farm pond can be difficult, requiring you to check several areas before draining the pond to check the basin. Start by checking outlet pipes and other drain structures to ensure that they are intact. Rusty or broken pipes can shed a surprising amount of water. Another place to look for leaks is around the banks and on the dam. Wet areas or places where wetland vegetation like cattails are growing can point to where the leak is coming out.

Also consider the way the pond loses water. If it loses water rapidly, then stops at a certain level, the leak is almost certainly along the banks or dam just above the lowest water point. If, however, the pond continues to drain with no end in sight, the leak is likely along a low point in the pond’s basin.
