How do you fix a farm pond that is leaking?

Fixing a leaky farm pond requires knowing the composition of your pond’s liner in order to determine the best method to seal it. In all cases, you will need to drain the pond so that the liner can be repaired or replaced. Ponds with flexible liners can often be repaired by applying patches to those liners—but if the liner is nearing the end of its life, replacement is the better option so that you won’t find yourself fixing new leaks year after year as the liner continues to degrade.

For ponds with clay or other types of natural liners, you’ll need to identify the liner’s composition, and then repair eroded patches using a similar soil blend—typically featuring high levels of clay. Bentonite clay can also often be used by tilling it into eroded areas of the pond’s liner.
