Algae can be starved out, prevented via aeration, and finally vacuumed or skimmed out manually. Avoid adding extra nutrients like in the way of fertilizers, plant food, etc.
Aeration is important to prevent algae from taking hold. Bubblers, fountains, or other equipment that moves the water will assist in this. Additionally, submerged plants will produce oxygen underneath the water's surface.
