How do you prepare for a food shortage?

How much food and supplies you store depends on the length of the shortage you're facing. A short-term gas crisis will not require the same amount of preparation as a months long lack of access to basic necessities. It's a good idea to keep basic staples on hand at all times. Dried goods, grains and rice, and canned goods can all make a huge difference. This small cache of supplies can be used for one time cases, like a night without power, or longer term food preparation and storage. Some good ideas to tuck away include canned beans and meats, dried fruits and meats, frozen vegetables, bags of rice, grain and flour, etc.

For a long-term food shortage, sustainability is key. It's impossible to store enough food to last forever -- but growing your own food forever is much more doable. Even if the outdoor conditions where you are are not ideal for growing, heated greenhouses can create the perfect environment for plants regardless. Once food is harvested, it can be preserved and stored for later use, meaning that your family can still enjoy a variety of produce even during the off-season.
