Algae can be skimmed off the top of a nursery pond, or aerators can be installed to help support low-oxygen conditions. While some algae is necessary for nursery ponds to function, like planktonic algae serving as food for fry, other forms are detrimental to the overall level of nutrients and oxygen within the pond. Decomposition of these excess organisms can also suck out necessary oxygen and leach out toxic chemicals like ammonia or phosphorous.
Prevention is the best solution for algae-levels within a pond. This includes frequent maintenance and removal before blooms are allowed to take a foothold. Aerators and chemical algae-control are other options.
