A reservoir's design, chemical treatment, and operational practices can all help reduce algae growth. One key method is disinfection, typically using chlorine or chloramine, which suppresses microbial and algal growth while keeping the water safe for consumption. Disinfectant levels are regularly monitored and adjusted to maintain effectiveness.
Physical measures also help. Covers, floating shades, or enclosed tanks reduce sunlight exposure, which limits the energy algae need to grow. Proper circulation and turnover of the water, using mixers or aeration systems, prevents stagnant zones where algae are most likely to develop. At inflow points, screens and filters reduce the introduction of organic matter and nutrients that algae feed on.
