How does a homestead pay for itself?

A homestead earns money through a variety of ways, this can include directly selling raw produce or animals, or by selling manufactured goods such as canned jams, tanned hides, cheese, cloth, etc. The options are only limited by your imagination and motivation. Excess produce can be sold at farmer's markets, roadside stands, or even directly to restaraunts or grocers. Farm-to-table restaraunts and locally sourced grocers may be particularly interested in your produce. Other goods can be turned into pre-made products, like jams, jellies, dried goods, baked goods, ciders, clothes, blankets, etc. Your homestead and land itself can generate profit by offering classes, tours, group experiences, dinner party tickets, or building a guest house that can be rented.

It may take a while to start earning money off of your homestead. As you invest in your homestead and gain your footing, it will be important to still be able to pay for your basic needs and expenses. Families accomplish this by keeping a second outside job, using their savings, or taking out loans.
