How does the shape of hay bales affect cover effectiveness?

Both round and square bales benefit from covers, but opinions differ on which is the better option for storage. For example, uncovered round bales, being larger, do not suffer as much loss since the center of the bale can remain dry even as the outer layers spoil. Square bales, on the other hand, are easier to stack in a fashion that promotes ventilation and minimizes mold growth. Round bales are heavier and structurally weaker and therefore generally cannot withstand stacking.

Still, the choice of bale shape is ultimately a matter of preference. Round bales often require covers that are specifically designed to fit their shape, such as large, cylindrical tarps or covers that can wrap around them securely. These covers must be tightly fastened to prevent moisture from entering. Square bales, on the other hand, can be more easily covered with flat tarps or sheets, which can be draped over and secured with simpler tools.
