How does UV exposure affect hay covers?

UV exposure gradually degrades hay covers by breaking down the materials, especially in covers made from geosynthetics like polyethylene or polypropylene. Over time, prolonged exposure to sunlight reduces the covers' effectiveness and requres replacement sooner.

The degradation process reduces the cover's durability, makes it brittle and crack, which renders it increasingly susceptible to tears, holes, and other damage. UV-resistant covers are treated to withstand sunlight longer, but even these will eventually degrade over the years with continuous exposure. If possible, storing covered hay under a structure, even one with open sides, provides valuable protection against UV exposure and other weather effects.
