Typically, groundwater is found in underground aquifers made by pockets of water in saturated soil or porous sediment. Precipitation seeps into soil and trickles deeper into the earth. Aquifers are formed as small sections of saturated soil and permeable rock. Since this water has passed through so much sediment, it is naturally more filtered than many other water sources.
After being pumped to the surface, or drawn up by a well, this water is stored in tanks, cisterns, or lagoons for later use.
