Groundwater is found naturally within aquifers underneath the ground, these are spaces and holes between impermeable rocks or sediment where water is captured. As precipitation soaks into the earth, it saturates soil and fills in pockets between stone and rock. Wells are dug into aquifers in order to gain access to the water within.
Groundwater is discharged as its pumped up to the surface, and as it emerges naturally from springs and rivers. Precipitation and runoff refill these aquifers. If too much water is pulled out of the aquifer before it has a chance to recharge, the aquifer may dry out completely.
