How long do fish stay in nursery ponds?

The total growing time within the nursery pond will depend on the kind of fish you're growing, and the conditions of the pond itself. In general, cold water fish grow slower than those that grow in warm water. The overall size of the fish can also affect how quickly they mature. Proper temperature, the right food, adequate room and oxygen, all contribute to happy and quickly growing fish.

Different fish have varying life cycles, but typically, nursery ponds are used from the fry to fingerling stages of fish life. This includes to the time that fish out of the egg have been able to succesfully absorb their attached yolk, to the time that they've gained scales and fins, and are around the length of your finger. Your egg supplier may have specific estimates about how long it will take fish to mature, but individual conditions will have a large impact on this.
