How long do geomembranes last?

Properly installed geomembranes can last an extremely long time, an HDPE geomembrane can last over 400 years if maintained properly, like those found in permanent, sanitary landfills. A thinner, less permanent liner like PVC can last up to 20 years or more. The longevity of a liner is largely determined by how well it was installed and the amount of maintenance that the liner receives.

The site should be cleared of rocks, debris, and particularly stubborn weeds before the liner is placed. Geomembranes like PVC that aren't resistant to UV degradation will need to be protected from exposure to the sun. An underlay may be necessary to prevent root or stone puncture as the ground settles over time.
