Koi are known for their impressive lifespans, often living 25 to 35 years in well-maintained pond environments. With excellent water quality, proper nutrition, and protection from disease, some koi have been known to live even longer—up to 50 years or more. In Japan, where koi keeping is a deeply rooted tradition, there are documented cases of koi living over 100 years, though such lifespans are rare and require ideal conditions throughout the fish’s life.
Most koi kept in backyard ponds in North America or Europe won’t reach those extremes, but with regular care, they can still be long-lived companions. Their lifespan depends greatly on consistent maintenance, good genetics, and a healthy, stable environment.
